books and territory / CHARLES ALBERT
It is a portrait of the King taken from an intimate perspective: through the collection of his writings and thoughts. Charles Albert was a discreet man but also a “pleasant talker in the Racconigi evenings”.
There he is, sitting at his desk while he is reading and writing, describing his journeys, imagining tales for his children, composing thoughts and letters for himself and his friends. He was a man and King of his own time, a crucial personality for the history of Italy and a promoter of the land of Piedmont and his resources. The develop of some areas in the Cuneo province and the growth of agricultural and wine-producing enterprises were Charles Albert’s merit; it is still possible to admire nowadays Charles Albert’s cellars in Barolo and Santa Vittoria d’Alba. He was particularly fond of the Neo-gothic style and he employed it while remodeling Racconigi Castle; the style spread to the closest areas (Novello, Marene, Pollenzo) also because of the workforce that worked for the King and later moved all over the region.
